Zum Ende des Ausstellungsjahrs 2015 zeigt dr. julius | ap in der Ausstellung SATZVERBINDUNGEN minimal-kinetische Skulpturen von Siegfried Kreitner [*1967 in Simbach am Inn] sowie Zeichnungen, Grafiken und raumbezogene Werke von Astrid Schindler [*1983 in Augsburg].
Wie sich Kreitners Arbeiten durch ihre Kombination aus langsamster mechanischer Bewegung mit ihrer jeweiligen Lichtführung nicht für kurzes Hinschauen und schnelles Erfassen eignen, erschließen sich Schindlers Werke ebenfalls nie auf den ersten Blick, sondern erst dann, wenn man diesem misstraut und sich eingehend mit ihnen und ihren hintergründigen Eigenheiten befasst. Gerade also weil die künstlerischen Mittel beider Positionen jeweils zurückgenommen und reduziert eingesetzt sind, ist man in der Betrachtung sehr gefordert, um sich die inneren Wesensmerkmale der gezeigten Kunst zu erschließen.
Die erste gemeinsame Ausstellung der beiden fügt insofern der programmatischen Linie von dr. julius | ap erneut jeweils sehr zeitgenössische, individuelle und spezifische künstlerische Aspekte in konzeptueller Fortschreibung einer auf dem Konkreten basierenden Kunstauffassung hinzu.

Am Freitag der Berlin Art Week 2015 eröffnet dr. julius | ap die Ausstellung The Continuity Of Attention der beiden in Wien lebenden Künstlerinnen Esther Stocker und Anna-Maria Bogner. Das Gegenüber und das Miteinander ihrer künstlerischen Arbeiten setzen ein bewusst in die Berlin Art Week 2015 hinein platziertes Ausrufezeichen für die programmatische Arbeit der Galerie.

Werk, Wirken und Werdegang von Esther Stocker [*1974 in Silandro/Schlanders, Südtirol, IT] unterstreichen in herausragender Art und Weise, dass eine konsequent nicht-abbildende, minimal-konstruktive und so in der Tradition einer konkreten Kunstauffassung stehende künstlerische Position im zeitgenössischen internationalen Kunstbetrieb große Anerkennung, Aktualität und Relevanz entfalten kann. Mit der innovativen wie beständigen Weiterentwicklung ihrer selbst gesetzten künstlerischen Grundsätze hat es Esther Stocker erreicht, von ihrem Ausgangspunkt der Malerei in vielen Formatvarianten, über die Erweiterung auf den architektonischen Kontext, bis hin zu daraus abgeleiteten Skulpturen, ein umfangreiches Oeuvre von höchster künstlerischer Qualität zu erschaffen. Ihre mit Konsequenz und Beharrlichkeit verfolgten Themen, insbesondere die intensive Auseinandersetzung mit Raster, Ordnung sowie deren jeweiligen Störungen und Relativierungen, zudem die jeweils individuelle Umsetzung und immanente Präzision der Ausführung ihrer Werke haben ihr weltweit ein hohes Ansehen bei Kunstinteressierten, Sammler/innen, Kurator/innen und Kunstwissenschaftler/innen verschafft. Beispielhaft für ihre Arbeiten zu nennen sind zudem die bewusste Abwesenheit von Farbe in Gemälden und all ihren anderen Werken, ihre beständige Übertragung erarbeiteter Erkenntnisse in andere Medien, wie etwa das Erweitern des zweidimensionalen Bildes zu großformatigen Installationen im dreidimensionalen Raum, oder zuletzt die Entwicklung einer speziellen Form von Plastiken, für die ein Bildträger nach innen verformt wird und dabei ein äußerlich wieder geschlossener Körper entsteht.

Anna-Maria Bogner [*1984 in Schwaz, Tirol, AT] hingegen hat ihren künstlerischen Hintergrund in der installativ eingesetzten Skulptur mit dem Fokus auf die Beziehung von Raum und dessen Wahrnehmung. Dabei sind ihre Arbeiten stets bewusst auf Mehrdeutigkeit hin angelegt, sowohl in den dreidimensionalen Installationen und Objekten als auch in ihren Zeichnungen. Diese sind auf den ersten Blick nach den Regeln der Zentralperspektive geometrisch konstruierte Raumgebilde, deren Begrenzungen durch exakt geführte Linien definiert sind. Wer sie aber mit architektonisch-analytischem Blick zu lesen beginnt, entdeckt zum Teil Verschiebungen, Doppelungen oder versetzte Anordnungen der Fluchtpunkte, wodurch die gezeichneten Raumbilder zu virtuellen, so nicht realisierbaren Entwürfen werden. Ihre plastischen Werke hingegen sind zwar ganz real und physisch vorhanden, dabei zumeist an der existierenden räumlichen Situation entwickelt und in situ realisiert worden, doch verlangen auch sie vom Betrachtenden den genauen und dechiffrierenden Blick, um ihre subtile und auf die Wechselbeziehung von Bewegung und Raumerfahrung ausgerichtete Konstruktion zu erfassen und die Setzung im umgebenden Raum zu verstehen.

In der Ausstellung verbinden die beiden Künstlerinnen ihre Interessen, Arbeitweisen und Medien in einer gemeinsam entwickelten und im Raum direkt auf einander bezogenen Rauminstallation, die den ersten Galerieraum transformiert und so ein Entree zur Auseinandersetzung mit den darüber hinaus zu sehenden jeweiligen Einzelwerken der beiden bildet.

On Friday, September 18, 2015 dr. julius | ap will present the exhibition The Continuity of Attention, featuring two Vienna-based artists, Esther Stocker and Anna-Maria Bogner. The contrast and interplay of their work make this exhibition, which is timed to coincide with Berlin Art Week 2015, a highlight in the gallery’s ongoing program.

Esther Stocker’s [*born 1974 in Silandro/Schlanders, South Tyrol] work, actions, and career serve as extraordinary testament to the fact that a resolutely non-representational, minimal-constructivist artistic approach in the concrete tradition can receive wide recognition and prove deeply relevant and topical in the contemporary international art scene. Stocker’s consistent yet continually evolving artistic principles have enabled her to develop a wide oeuvre of the highest quality, beginning with paintings in varied formats, then expanding her work into architectonic contexts and thus to sculptures derived from the latter. Her work exhibits an intensive engagement with grids and order, as well as with their disruption and relativization. These themes, combined with individualized modes of realization and inherently precise execution have gained her a high reputation worldwide among art-lovers, collectors, and art historians. Also typical of her work is the intentional absence of color in paintings and all other works, the transferal of artistic discoveries from one medium to another, for example the expansion of two-dimensional paintings into large-format three-dimensional installations. Most recently she has developed a special form of sculpture in which a painting surface is warped inward to create an object that is once again outwardly closed.

In contrast, Anna-Maria Bogner’s [*born 1984 in Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria] artistic background is in installed sculpture, with a focus on the relationship between space and its perception. Her works—three-dimensional installations and objects as well as drawings—always consciously aim at ambiguity. At first glance, the latter appear to depict geometric spatial structures drawn according to the rules of one-point perspective, with boundaries defined by precise lines. Seen through an architectonic-analytic lens, however, they reveal shifted, doubled, or displaced vanishing points, and become virtual, unrealizable concepts. Her sculptural works, on the other hand, are quite real and physically present, for the most part developed for existing spaces and realized in situ. Yet they too demand a viewer’s concentrated, deciphering eye to comprehend their subtle exploration of the interrelation between movement and the experience of space, and to appreciate their place in the surrounding room.

In this exhibition the two artists combine their interests, practices, and media in a jointly-developed installation that transforms the first room of the gallery and thus serves as an entrée to the two artists’ individual works displayed in the rooms beyond.

METRIC stellt Arbeiten der niederländischen Bildhauerin Riki Mijling und des britischen Minimalisten Douglas Allsop einander gegenüber. Die künstlerischen Konzepte beider haben klare geometrisch basierte Ausgangspunkte, die sich durch die Verwendung spezifischer Medien, Werkstoffe und Techniken in ihren Werken jeweils sehr individuell entfalten.
Im Dialog mit einander sowie den Räumen von dr. julius | ap ergänzen sich deren Qualitäten gegenseitig zu einer künstlerisch und programmatisch hochverdichteten Ausstellung.

Mit der Ausstellung „Sätze“ zeigt Monika Brandmeier Arbeiten in verschiedenen Medien – Zeichnung, Fotografie, Skulptur – denen gemeinsam ist, dass in ihnen einzelne Elemente auf einleuchtende Weise zusammengefügt und zusammengehalten werden. Diese Konstellationen sind niemals nur Möglichkeit oder Variante, nie beiläufig im Sinne eines Fundstücks oder einer charmanten Beobachtung, sondern klare Sätze, nach deren Lektüre man versteht, dass sie vor allem von ihrer eigenen Grammatik handeln.

In “Sätze” ["Sentences", also "Sets"], Monika Brandmeier exhibits works in various media — drawing, photography, sculpture — in all of which individual elements come together and cohere in a convincing way. These constellations are never possibilities or variations, never incidental in the sense of found objects or charming observations. Rather, they are clear sentences, and after reading them one understands that their subject is above all their own grammar.

Die Duo-Ausstellung von Hartmut Böhm und Matthew Deleget bei dr. julius | ap, ist auf Verabredung per email noch bis zum 14. Februar 2015 zu sehen.

Die Künstler stehen einander in einem bemerkenswerten Spannungsverhältnis gegenüber, sowohl durch ihre Zugehörigkeit zu unterschiedlichen Generationen als auch zur europäischen bzw. amerikanischen Tradition minimal-konkreter Kunst und deren übergeordneten kulturellen Bezügen. Sie stellen mit RELATED LINES erstmals gemeinsam in einer Duo-Ausstellung bei dr. julius | ap aus, nachdem beide schon 2012 an der internationalen Gruppenausstellung FutureShock OneTwo beteiligt waren.
Die beiden Künstler werden einander sowie auch den Räumen der Galerie mit installativen, präzise gesetzten Arbeiten begegnen.

Hartmut Böhm ist einer der führenden Vertreter der europäischen Konkreten Kunst und einer der einflussreichsten reduktiven Künstler seiner Generation. Geboren 1938 in Kassel studierte er an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste ebenda bei Arnold Bode, dem Gründer und Kurator der Documenta.
Im Jahr 1959 schuf Böhm seine ersten systembasierten Arbeiten. Wenige Jahre später waren seine Arbeiten Teil der wegweisenden Ausstellung Nouvelle Tendance: Propositions visuelles du movement international, die im Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris von April bis Mai 1964 gezeigt wurde. Die Ausstellung führte in neue Kunstbewegungen wie Op Art, Kinetische und Konkrete Kunst, Zero, GRAV, Gruppo T und Gruppo N ein und hob insbesondere solche Werke hervor, die Konzepte von Bewegung durch serielle Wiederholung vermittelten.
Böhm wurde seit 1964 in über siebzig Einzel- und Duo-Ausstellungen gezeigt und hat an hunderten internationaler Gruppenausstellungen in Museen, Galerien und Non-Profit-Initiativen teilgenommen. Matthew Deleget [*1972 in Hammond, Indiana] ist Künstler, Kurator und Kunstarbeiter. Er hat seine Arbeiten national und international ausgestellt, darunter in Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen in den USA, Europa, Australien und Neuseeland. Arbeiten von Deleget wurden von der Kuratorin Michelle Grabner 2014 in die Whitney Biennale im Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, aufgenommen. Weitere Museumsausstellungen sind etwa im MoMA / PS1 [Long Island City, New York]; Bronx Museum of the Arts [Bronx, NY]; Herbert F. Johnson Museum [Ithaca, NY]; Bass Museum of Art [Miami, FL]; und Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art [Indianapolis, IN] zu verzeichnen.
2003 gründete Matthew Deleget MINUS SPACE, eine Plattform für internationale reduktive Kunst in Brooklyn, NY. Seit 2006 hat er fast 50 Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen organisiert, sowohl in der Galerie von MINUS SPACE in Dumbo, Brooklyn, als auch an anderen kooperierenden Orten auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene, unter anderem in Mexiko, Belgien, Australien und Neuseeland.
MINUS SPACE Ausstellungen wurden unter anderem in Art in America, Artcritical, Artforum, Artnet Magazine, ArtNews, The Brooklyn Rail, Houston Public Radio, Huffington Post, The New Criterion, New York Magazine, NYFA Current, New York Sun, Time Out New York, Village Voice und The Wall Street Journal besprochen.
Matthew Deleget wird als Künstler vertreten von der Alejandra von Hartz Gallery [Miami, FL]; Peter Blake Gallery [Laguna Beach, CA]; und der Galerie Sonja Roesch [Houston, TX]. Er besitzt einen Master of Fine Arts in Malerei und einen Master of Science in Theorie, Kritik und Geschichte der Kunst, Design und Architektur des Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Er hat zudem einen Bachelor in Kunst und Deutsch des Wabash College, Crawfordsville, IN. Er lebt mit seiner Frau, der Künstlerin Rossana Martinez [www.rossanamartinez.com], und dem gemeinsamen Sohn Mateo in Brooklyn, NY.

dr. julius | ap is pleased to announce that the two-person exhibition RELATED LINES featuring Hartmut Böhm and Matthew Delegetis still on view through February 14, 2015 on appointment by email.

 

The two artists create a dynamic tension by belonging to different generations, as well as to European and American traditions of minimal concrete art and related cultural references. RELATED LINES is their first two-person exhibition with dr. julius | ap. Both artists were included in the 2012 international group show FutureShock OneTwo at the gallery.
The two artists will interact with each other and with the gallery spaces through installation-like, precisely placed works.

Hartmut Böhm is a leading proponent of European Concrete art and one of the most influential reductive artists of his generation. Born in Kassel, Germany in 1938, he studied at Hochschule für Bildende Künste with Arnold Bode, founder and curator of Documenta. Böhm produced his first systems-based work in 1959. Several years later, his work was included in the seminal exhibition Nouvelle Tendance: Propositions visuelles du movement international at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France in 1964. The exhibition heralded in the new Op, Kinetic, Concrete, Zero, GRAV, Gruppo T and Gruppo N art movements and highlighted works that addressed the concept of movement as conveyed through serial repetition.
Böhm has mounted more than seventy solo and two-person exhibitions since 1964 and has participated in hundreds of group exhibitions at museums, galleries and non-profits internationally. Matthew Deleget [*1972 in Hammond, Indiana, IN, US] is an artist, curator, and arts worker. Matthew has exhibited his work nationally and internationally, including solo and group exhibitions in the US, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. His work was included in the 2014 Whitney Biennial by Michelle Grabner at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. His additional museum exhibitions include MoMA/P.S.1 [Long Island City, NY]; Bronx Museum of the Arts [Bronx, NY]; Herbert F. Johnson Museum [Ithaca, NY]; Bass Museum of Art [Miami, FL]; and Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art [Indianapolis, IN].
Matthew’s work has been reviewed in Artforum, The New York Times, Hyperallergic, Flash Art, Artnet Magazine, and The Philadelphia Inquirer, among others. He is a member of American Abstract Artists, the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation’s Artist Advisory Committee, and the board of The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts.
In 2003, Matthew founded MINUS SPACE [www.minusspace.com], a platform for reductive art on the international level based in Brooklyn, NY.
